Magic of the Zodiac Modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable

while the elemental nature of each zodiac sign is typically well-known even if you’re just dipping your toes into astrology, we often don’t hear as much about the modality of the signs! the modality of each sign only adds and speaks to the elemental expression of each zodiac sign and provides us greater information of how that elemental energy is expressed! their modality is also what distinguishes each of the elemental signs from one another. we don’t just have three air signs that all express the same energies, magic, and lessons. we have three air signs with three distinct modalities that reveal the range of natures that air energy can be expressed!

in interpreting your natal chart, looking into the modality of your placements will provide a great deal of insight into how your energy flows and the expression of elemental qualities of your chart. it can also provide insight into what ways of expressing energy that you may need to cultivate and find balance with! because, while your natal chart may indicate a balanced distribution of placement between the elements, this can be radically different if all of these placements are in cardinal signs versus mutable signs!

after all, the modalities represent a cycle. they represent the beginning, middle, and end to seasons—and this cycle expands outward to so many other aspects of our lives! all three are required to bring forth creation. we need conception, gestation, and deliverance for the birth of something, anything! so let’s discuss the magic of each of the modalities, the lessons they bring us, and how we can use this information to look at our own charts!

CARDINAL

aries, cancer, libra, capricorn

it begins with the cardinal signs! the cardinal signs begin our seasons from the first signs of spring to settling into the chill of winter. during the spring, do you ever notice the first buds of the leaves to then have them seemingly appear overnight, filling out the trees and spreading a definitive announcement of “spring is here!”? this is the magic of the cardinal signs. they show us the beauty of bursting forth into the unknown and bring the ability to believe, create, and erupt from nothingness into something. it is turning the friction of flint and rock into the smallest spark that grows into a flame. it is starting with limits and only seeing the opportunity to build and create so much further—even beyond what we can conceive at the time. they are the big bang, synthesis, creation, and conception.

FIXED

taurus, leo, scorpio, aquarius

the fixed signs carry out the seasons and bring them to their height. this modality brings us the lushness of spring, the intensity of summer, the peak of fall, and the depths of winter. this ability to show the full expression of any energy—whether its a season, an ideology, or characteristic—is the culmination of their magic. this magic exists in their ability to nurture, invest, carry forth, and tend to what needs tending to. they are the keepers of our ideals and the guardians of what we value. they help us continue forward as the journey threatens to end us. they are fruitful gardens, sanctuaries, deep quarries. they bring committed dedication and ask how we cannot just go further, but deeper through their respective elemental energies.

MUTABLE

gemini, virgo, sagittarius, pisces

our final modality, mutable, presents the importance of flexibility and transience as we prepare to move from one season to the next. they teach us the art and wisdom that comes from impermanence and change. they bring the changing tide and inspire us to be playful, curious, and to release our clutches on the things we are clinging too tightly to. they are wind sweeping through a meadow, dancing wildfires, and the rise and fall of the tide. they remind us how to be expansive, endless, changeable, and always developing. they ask, what happens when you let go off all your preconceptions about your being? how can we reimagine ourselves just within our finite life? is it then we can feel infinite?

THe MODalitieS IN OUR LIVES & CHARTS

just like the elemental component of the zodiac signs, looking at the modality of our natal placements provides us wisdom to understanding how we express ourselves, how our energy flows, and provides insight into where we may need to cultivate balance.

to calculate the distribution of the modalities in your chart, we will use a 14 point system where you will tally up the distribution of modes in your chart.

  1. start by creating a small chart with “cardinal, fixed, and mutable” as the header at the top

  2. start by going through your natal placements INCLUDING ALL YOUR PLANETS, ASCENDANT, AND MIDHEAVEN, and tallY POINTS for each placement—granting 2 points to your sun, moon, and rising sign

  3. once you move through your placements, add it all up and see how it shakes out!

p.s. if you use astro.com, it actually does this for you already! it’s that little 3x4 table below your natal chart and above your aspects where it shows you the distribution of elements in your chart against the different modalities.

HAVING 4-5 POINTS FOR ONE MODALITY IN YOUR CHART IS CONSIDERED TO BE AVERAGE, 6 POINTS OFFERS A STRONG INFLUENCE, AND HAVING OVER 7 POINTS IN ONE MODALITY INDICATES THAT THIS IS A PROMINENT ASPECT IN INTERPRETING THE ENERGIES IN YOUR CHART.

BASED ON THE DISTRIBUTION, IT MAY BE THAT YOU HAVE A LOT OF PLACEMENTS IN ONE MODALITY AND FEW PLACEMENTS IN ANOTHER. THIS IS PART OF YOUR UNIQUE ENERGETIC SIGNATURE THAT WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR NATURAL PROCLIVITIES AND SKILLS, AND ALSO THE AREAS THAT MAY NEED SOME ATTENTION.

BELOW YOU CAN READ ABOUT WHAT ATTRIBUTES ARE THEMATICALLY ASSOCIATED WHEN THERE’S AN EMPHASIS OR LACK OF PARTICULAR PLACEMENTS—PLUS AN AFFIRMATION IF YOU ARE TRYING TO CULTIVATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH MODE!

CARDINAL

ACTIVE, AMBITIOUS, ENERGETIC, BUSY, DRIVING, INVOLVED, INITIATIVE, OPPORTUNISTIC

IF YOU HAVE OVER 6-7 POINTS ASSIGNED TO THE CARDINAL MODE, THEN YOU ARE LIKELY ENERGETIC, AMBITIOUS, AND POSSESS THE ABILITY TO BRING INITIATIVE AND ENERGY TO A WHOLE ROOM, PROJECTS, AND PARTNERSHIPS. YOU WOULD RATHER BE WORKING ON SOMETHING THAn FEEL LIKE YOUR LIFE IS EMPTY AND OFTEN ALWAYS HAVING SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE WORKING ON. ON THE FLIP SIDE OF THIS, YOU MAY STRUGGLE TO FIND REST, SIT STILL, OR NOT BE DOING SOMETHING. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THESE INDIVIDUALS TO BE CONSCIOUS ABOUT BALANCING THEIR NEED FOR ACTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL/VOCATIONAL GROWTH WITH THE RELATIONSHIPS IN THEIR LIFE SUCH AS LIMITING LATE NIGHTS AT THE OFFICE, WEEKENDS SPENT AWAY FROM HOME, OR EVENINGS WORKING AND TO LEARN HOW TO STRIKE A BALANCE. (IF YOU WANT TO TALK CARDINAL EMPHASIS, I HAVE 9 POINTS IN THE CARDINAL MODE!)

FOR THOSE WITH FEW CARDINAL PLACEMENTS, THERE MAY BE A SENSE OF “STUCKNESS” AROUND GETTING THINGS OFF THE GROUND OR INITIATING PROJECTS. IF YOU ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP YOUR IDEAS OR PROJECTS, IT MAY BE USEFUL TO PARTNER WITH OR HAVE SOMEONE TO HELP YOU START THINGS OFF—BECAUSE ITS LIKELY THAT YOU ARE FULLY CAPABLE OF COMPLETING OR FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH SAID INITIATIVES ONCE THERE IS SOME MOMENTUM. FIND A SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS YOU TO GET OVER THAT INITIAL INERTIA.

affirmation: I INITIATE

FIXED

DETERMINED, WILLFUL, PURPOSEFUL, STEADFAST , DELIBERATE, STRONG-WILLED, PERSISTENT

IF YOU HAVE OVER 6-7 POINTS ASSIGNED TO THE FIXED MODE, YOU ARE LIKELY INCREDIBLy FOCUSED ON WHAT YOU VALUE, YOUR GOALS, AND WHAT BRINGS YOU A SENSE OF SATISFACTION. YOU ARE EXCELLENT AT FOLLOWTHROUGH, BUT MAY BE SLOW TO START. WHILE YOUR STEADFASTNESS IS OFTEN ADMIRED, IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO FALL INTO THE TERRITORY OF OBSTINANCE OR STICKING WITH PEOPLE, SITUATIONS, OR IDEALS SIMPLY FOR THE SAKE OF NOT HAVING TO FACE CHANGE. INSTEAD, IT IS IMPORTANT TO CULTIVATE A HEALTHY ATTITUDE OR PROCESS FOR EVALUATING WHAT YOU ARE INVESTING YOUR TIME AND ENERGY IN AND MAKING SURE IT TRULY ALIGNS WITH YOUR DESIRES—NOT JUST WHAT YOU’VE BEEN SPENDING YOUR TIME DOING. CULTIVATING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AROUND DIFFERENCE, FEEDBACK, AND CHANGE WILL ALL BE HELPFUL SKILLS IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF FIXED PLACEMENTS!

IF YOU HAVE FEW FIXED PLACEMENTS, FOLLOWTHROUGH MAY BE A LITTLE TRICKY. IT COULD BE THAT YOU ARE EXCELLENT AT GETTING THINGS OFF THE GROUND BUT SEEING IT THROUGH CAN FEEL A BIT LABORIOUS SOMETIMES. YOU MAY ALSO STRUGGLE WITH CREATING STRUCTURE AND STABILITY IN YOUR LIFE DEPENDING ON YOUR PLACEMENTS. GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING A HEALTHY SENSE OF DISCIPLINE ABOUT FINISHING WHAT YOU’VE STARTED WILL BE HELPFUL IN LIVING YOUR LIFE. IT IS ALSO CRUCIAL TO BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU AGREE TO HAVE ON YOUR PLATE AS THIS CAN TAKE YOUR ENERGY AWAY FROM COMPLETING THE TASKS AND INITIATIVES YOU’VE ALREADY STARTED. THIS MINDFULNESS ABOUT THESE COMMITMENTS WILL ALLOW YOU TO TEND TO THESE OTHER PROJECTS DEMANDING YOUR ATTENTION.

affirmation: I SUSTAIN

MUTABLE

ADAPTABLE, VERSATILE, VARIABLE, PERSONAL, RESTLESS, INDECISIVE, OPEN

IF YOU HAVE 6-7 POINTS ASSIGNED TO THE MUTABLE MODE, YOUR FOCUS IS LIKELY ON RELATIONSHIPS AND THRIVE ON DEVELOPMENT, VARIETY, AND CHANGE. YOU ARE LIKELY MORE INCLINED TO GO WITH THE FLOW AND READILY ADAPT TO CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES AND PEOPLE. WHILE THERE ARE MANY ADVANTAGES TO THIS MORE RELAXED RELATIONSHIP WITH LIFE, YOU MAY STRUGGLE WITH FEELING DIRECTIONLESS—INSTEAD PREFERRING FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO MAKE DECISIONS FOR YOU OR TO JUST FOLLOW THEIR PATH. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU SPEND TIME SEPARATING YOUR FEELINGS FROM THE DESIRES AND FEELINGS OF OTHERS AND ASK YOURSELF, WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT? AND BECOMING MORE COMFORTABLE WITH ASKING THIS QUESTION OF YOURSELF. THROUGH BEING ABLE TO RECOGNIZE YOUR OWN NEEDS, DESIRES, AND AMBITIONS WILL ALLOW YOU TO BE IN BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS AS YOU WON’T BE AS INCLINED TO PROJECT YOUR NEEDS ONTO OTHERS AND INSTEAD ALLOW BOTH TO BE HEARD AND REALIZED.

IF YOU HAVE FEW MUTABLE PLACEMENTS, YOU LIKELY HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT. IF NOT ATTENDED TO MINDFULLY, YOU CAN FREQUENTLY BE UNWILLING TO COMPROMISE AND FORCE OTHER PEOPLE TO FIT YOUR VISION OR EXPECTATIONS. BEING FLEXIBLE TO CHANGE IS A SKILL THAT WILL NEED CULTIVATING BUT WILL HELP APPEASE WHAT IS LIKELY SOME LEVEL OF ANXIETY. LEARNING HOW TO ACTIVELY LISTEN, FIND COMPROMISE, AND HONOR THE NEEDS AND LIMITATIONS OF OTHERS WILL ALLOW YOU TO HARNESS YOUR DRIVE TO ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL RATHER THAN BEING CONSTANTLY STUCK IN FRUSTRATION OVER OTHER PEOPLE OR SITUATIONS BENDING TO YOUR WILL.

affirmation: I COMPLETE

FINAL THOUGHTS

WHEN I FIRST STARTED GOING THROUGH MY CHART, LOOKING AT NOT JUST THE ELEMENTS BUT THE MODE OF EACH OF MY PLACEMENTS WAS TRULY CRUCIAL IN HELPING ME ADDRESS SOME OF THE BEHAVIORAL PATHWAYS I WAS FEELING STUCK AROUND! I HAVE 9 POINTS ASSIGNED TO THE CARDINAL MODE AND I’VE FREQUENTLY FELT FRUSTRATED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE JUST NOT DOING WHAT I WANT THEM TO AND HAVE FOUND MYSELF TRAPPED IN A CYCLE OF BURNOUT AND RECOVERY. HAVING THIS LANGUAGE AROUND THESE BEHAVIORS AND ENERGETIC TENDENCIES—ALONG WITH LOOKING INTO MY CHART FURTHER—HAS REALLY HELPED ME BE ABLE TO SEE MY BLINDSPOTS AND BE MINDFUL ABOUT MY TENDENCIES SO I CAN TRULY USE MY ENERGY IN A HEALTHY, FLOWING WAY!

4 Astrology Books to Start Learning About Your Chart

When we are looking up to experts we follow or just hearing a friend share their astrological knowledge, we can hear the question, “How did they learn all that?!” enter our minds! In my path, I’ve used books to get a basic knowledge so then I could start really working and forming associations with my own chart—and later would start working with others’ charts! Whether you want to know how to utilize and work with your personal natal chart or eventually want to work with others’, here are some books that have been and continue to be defining in my work with astrology! These are perfect if you are wanting to build a solid foundation or looking for alternative perspectives or additional knowledge if you consider yourself an expert!

1. ASTROLOGY AND STORYTELLING BY ALICE SPARKLY KAT

I wish this was one of the first astrological books I had read! In this workbook, Alice Sparkly Kat provides a stunning, thought-provoking analysis about the implications of Western astrology being the predominant form of astrology. This book explores and redefines the zodiac signs in a way that applies to a modern, capitalistic society. It examines the intersection of astrology, our culture, and our biology in a way that will be deeply informative for the beginner, redefining for the intermediate practitioners, and create a paradigm shift for the expert.

The book is also a workbook! Designed to help you explore and write about your natal chart as a work of fiction, this book helps you create associations with your chart in a way that is usable and workable for you and by you. It can be used personally or in a group!

This is not your cut and dry astrology book of yore, but is intersectional, blunt, and has a critical, insightful take on astrology. I really could not recommend this text more whether you are a beginner or have been a professional astrologer for 20 years. It created a huge paradigm shift in how I consider zodiacal energies and components of my chart, and the importance of being a teacher in reading the charts of others versus a mystic that imposes definitions of someone’s being in a top-down strategy. she also has a new workbook that just came out that provides exercises, meditations, written exercises that follow planetary events and cycles. it also “frames mental health issues as social issues, because depression, paranoia, and anxiety are public feelings.”

2. THE ASTROLOGY OF SELF-DISCOVERY BY TRACY MARKS

41k6-dMXj1L._SY346_.jpg

This was the book that introduced me to the power of transits and how astrology is a living, breathing practice. In this book, Marks provides guidance for achieving self-development and accessing our potential through finding attunement and alignment to planetary influences. Like many more “modern” astrology books, Marks does not see astrology has being fatalistic, but every transit and placement as an opportunity to explore ourselves, our attitudes, thought-processes, and ways of navigating life. She shows how understanding astrology and the transits affecting us can provide a means of guidance in navigating through life.

I personally love how the book is structured as it starts with our moon signs and the importance of exploring and reconciling with our inner child, plus she devotes a great deal of time to the longer-term, outer planetary transits. I particularly loved how when she presents transits that are affecting her chart, whereas I may not have had an immediate association with the implication or “meaning” of that transit, she provides illustrative examples of how it affected her life. This really opened my eyes to how planetary forces influences our lives and made me really consider how I could start aligning myself with longer term transits in my life. Plus, she does an excellent job discussing how transits aren’t events we need to cower in fear over or dread, but are invitations to consider different aspects and dimensions of ourselves and ways of moving through life.

This book provided a sense of freshness, realness, and liveliness to my view and practice of astrology and I highly recommend this book for folks who want to take their understanding of astrology beyond their natal chart and understand it as a dynamic, every day discipline.

3. ASTROLOGY, KARMA & TRANSFORMATION BY STEPHEN ARROYO

51U-Z2iurYL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

i will fully admit that i am still in the process of reading this book, but aside from the information that arroyo has presented, i particularly love the angle he approaches astrology and its use. this angle would be moving away from predictive astrology more towards utilizing it as a tool for spiritual and psychological growth and development. i greatly appreciate how he encourages the process of reading someone else’s chart to be a conversation—much like what is illustrated and discussed in alice sparkly kat’s book—rather than natal chart readings as a display of prowess over being able to draw stunning, dogmatic conclusions from someone’s chart.

while the language of this book is centered around being an astrologer providing readings for others, i think anyone of any skill level would find this to be an enriching read. plus, i think it lays a wonderful groundwork for being a teacher and guide in delivering readings for others rather than drawing strict, dogmatic conclusions, if you were to ever decide to start offering astrological readings for others! these principles are even important to consider if you are just sharing information with your friends or have the privilege to look at their chart.

otherwise, this book provides wonderful insight and a great perspective on astrological topics such as karma & relationships, progressions, transits, the meaning of the Ascendant & its ruler, a positive approach to Saturn, and an in-depth look at pluto. this is an excellent book if you are looking explore your chart through the lens of self-development and understanding the karma of your chart.

4. ASTROLOGY FOR YOURSELF BY DEMETRA GEORGE & DOUGLAS BLOCH

this is a book that i have just decided to purchase and work with! while there are numerous books out there that are styled more as “textbooks” and provide definitive meanings of your astrological placements, my focus and interest—even in providing astrological insight to others—has rested in helping other create their own meanings and associations with their chart and overall spiritual practice! astrology has provided such a rich language and system for me to understand myself, chart a path towards my development, and particularly endure difficulty and turmoil in my life.

this book is a workbook that is designed to introduce you to and guide you through the language, art, and science of astrology, while also providing exercises to allow you to write your own chart interpretations! i promise that engaging in the activity of interpreting your own chart and creating your own associations is a powerful practice that will bring great meaning and depth to your life, understanding of yourself, and in laying a foundation to your astrological practice!

Early March Transits

just like that it’s march! the month that brings us the first tastes of spring in the northern hemisphere, promises of new growth, more sunlight, and warmer temperatures. we feel like coming out of the cocoons we had snuggled into over winter and begin to peek our heads out again, a little bleary but still starry-eyed about what could be awaiting us.

astrologically, february presented an interesting pace with relatively few major transits or aspects being universally made. for me, i felt incredibly stagnant and this stillness forced me to confront a number of things that were ready to fall away as we progressed towards this promise of new growth. now, we are immersed in a web of transits that seem to want to stir the pot, wake us up, and get our blood moving!

early march transits

you may have seen a barrage of posts about these transits on your instagram feed, but it can be challenging to keep it straight.

the three main transits that are at play are the following:

uranus moving into taurus

new moon at 15 degrees pisces

mercury retrograding starting at 29 degrees pisces

to clarify, uranus made its first ingress into the fixed earth sign of taurus last year in may. but like many planets, it retrogrades or appears to move backwards and revisited aries where it resided for the last 7 years. now, it is here to stay until 2026.

while uranus moving into taurus marks a new era for us, the new moon and mercury retrograding are more fleeting transits only lasting a few weeks in the case of mercury and a singular day for the new moon. despite this vast difference in cadence between these celestial bodies, the intersection of all these transits happening together provide a powerful opportunity for setting intentions and thinking intentionally about stepping into this new chapter.

let’s chat about what each of these energies mean, though, and how we can work with them.

uranus in taurus

when uranus was discovered in 1781 by william herschel, it opened up a new dimension of our cosmos and introduced a restructuring of how we consider the planets in astrology. now we have the personal planets, the moon through saturn, and the outer planets, uranus through pluto. this event of awakening, restructuring, and creating new pathways and networks of connection are all part of uranus’s energetic signature.

it had made it first steps into taurus last spring, but then it retrograded back into aries where it had spent the last 7 years. now, it makes its return and will work through taurus’s prism until 2026.

when uranus was in aries, it had us consider our individualism in different aspects of our lives. that aspect is is determined by which house aries rules in your chat, but the disruption, friction, and collapse of established foundations occurred through the lens of our identity and who we consider ourselves to be. after all, aries is the baby of the zodiac being the first of the zodiac wheel. while it holds formidable ambition and power as a cardinal fire sign, the phrase that fits aries is “i am” and reflects our process around self-determination. as the sign that welcomes the spring equinox, aries reflects that same energy of seeds bursting forth to launch themselves from the dark cocoon within the dirt out into the sunlight in a declaration of being.

as uranus moves into taurus, we enter the energy of a fixed earth sign. while the cardinal signs launch into new seasons, the fixed signs are about maintaining it. while seasonally speaking aries is about new growth and eruption, taurus is about the lushness that comes with the middle of spring. this means the flowers, nectar, sweet smells, bright colors. in taurus, we’ve moved past that initial inertia of self-determination and now it is all about getting spacious and understanding how we interface with the world around us—outside of the story in our head where we are the protagonist. we begin to place value on our physical experiences and how they interact with the identity that we have formed.

taurus begins to represent art museums, fine dining, aestheticism, interior decoration, dance performances, perfume, aesthetic architecture. it is also stock, bonds, markets, and bank accounts as we create systems around determining, investing in, and maintaining value.

with uranus moving into taurus, we see chaos become inserted into what is otherwise all about stability, maintaining, and determining worth. as a whole, this likely means shifts in banking policy, continuing to see the development of cryptocurrency and maybe it even shifting into the mainstream, or a change in tax policy.

to know what this transit means for you personally, you will need to see which house uranus is passing through and how it is aspecting your other planets to understand the full picture. in relation to this section of your life, this multi-year transit asks:

what do you value?

how do you invest your time and resources?

what story do you tell yourself about this section of your life?

how do you need to change it? what are you required to let go of?

think of this as a tower moment in that section of your chart. notice the planets it lights up and your feelings about having chaos in that part of your chart.

new moon & mercury retrograde in pisces

while we have many years to grapple with uranus’s energy in taurus, we stand at the beginning of a shorter cycle—the new moon in pisces. at the same time, mercury—which rules our thoughts, words, and forms of communication—commences its retrograde at 29 degrees pisces. this essentially means it was almost out the door of pisces only to go back inside to search for something or reconsider its destination.

pisces, ruler of the 12th house, is often referred to as an amalgamation of all the signs before it. if we consider the zodiac as a wheel, if aries is birth, pisces is not just death but the afterlife and our superconscious—how we exist on a soul-level. the 12th house rules over spiritualism and enlightenment, expressions of the soul including music and poetry, but it also rules over asylums and prisons. the best way i’ve seen it stated is the 12th house asks us if we will become prisoners of our own minds or if we can set ourselves free.

the new moon always gives us a moment to take a breath, come back to ourselves, and set intentions before launch into the next lunar cycle. with the new moon being in pisces, we are offered an opportunity for growth and renewal in the aspects of our piscean nature: our subconscious, our spiritual selves, our creative selves, the part that transcends beyond our physical experience.

mercury being retrograde in pisces only reinforces this moment of contemplation. mercury being retrograde often draws a great deal of ire in pop culture, because it chafes with the speed of our society, of our constant talking, email sending, texting, and desire to be constantly projecting ourselves outward. instead, it asks for that dialogue to be returned inside of ourselves, to listen more than we speak, to double-check our work, and to be intentional about the energy and pieces of ourselves we are projecting into the world. it brings appreciation back to the power we have to translate our thoughts into words and how that shapes the reality around us.

retrogrades as a whole give us an opportunity to retrace our steps. it’s almost like when you misplaced something at a party night before and you return in the daytime to check under the couch cushions. while it’s the same setting, the context shifts dramatically. you get to reconsider what lessons and messages were coming out of those moments when we first moved through that space, and also reminds us of what we may have missed in our haste.

the takeaway

while uranus in taurus is asking us to empty our pockets and really reconsider what holds value in our life and how we move through life as a physical being, the spiritual 12th house nature of pisces asks us to do kon mari of the soul.

you can see how this energy together gives us this moment to do an inventory of what is in our mind, the thoughts and stories we are operating based on, and also take a look at the dreams we have floating within our minds. we are asked what sparks joy and what we are ready to unburden ourselves with while still thanking each experience for what it has given us. there is a sense of recollecting what we are no longer interested in investing in both on the spiritually and physical planes of our lives and thinking about how with uranus in taurus, a new dawn is on the horizon and we need to be intentional about how we are arriving.

RITUAL IDEAS

if you are interested in engaging with ritual work or tarot spreads around these transits, head over to this post where i list some of the ideas i have about working with this energy and the idea of connecting the physical and spiritual planes of our lives.

Moon Void of Course: The Resting Moon

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

The thing that still brings me the most delight about magic, astrology, tarot, and more, is learning about other people’s personal practices. It’s because when they light up and share the associations, experiences, and stories they have, they are creating magic through storytelling. Our daily rituals and lived experiences with magic and modalities carry just as much power (and I think even a little bit more) than something that may be solely instructional because when we feel it in our heart, our intention is aligned and that’s where the magic is created!

That’s why I want to share a little bit about my rituals around the moon being void of course, which is a regular element to my astrological practice (which I do consider a practice more than just a method!).

featured image by Benjamin Combs on Unsplash

What does it mean for the moon to be void of course?

The moon changes zodiac signs approximately every two and a half days. Within this time period, there is typically a moment where it is no longer making any applying aspects (aka opposition, trine, square, sextile, or conjunction) to other planets as it changes signs. It instead enters this in between state of not being in major relation and in transition between the signs. A CALENDAR FOR THIS TRANSITION CAN BE accessed HERE.

Just like the waxing and waning of different moon cycles grant us different energies to work with, this liminal moment also grants us opportunities. That being said, when I was first introduced to what it meant for the moon being void of course, I did not have such as rosy relationship with it!

Instead, I was given a laundry list of activities that would inevitably fail if I were to initiate them while the moon was in this in between time. Surgeries that wouldn’t heal right, job interviews that wouldn't end well, projects that would never come to fruition.

I was freaked out by this planetary saboteur!

the moon being void of course as permission

as I felt nervous scheduling meetings without consulting moon void of course calendars or dread about attending those set by others—a quote surfaced in my mind from when I read Tracy Marks’s book Astrology of Self-Discovery. A great deal of the book centers around our personal experiences of transits, which has become such a focus of my personal astrological practice, and it addresses this feeling of doom and gloom.

Verbatim, what is the point of having knowledge of astrology if we are just going to dread and brace for every transit that comes our way?

I started to utilize moon void of course calendars in scheduling meetings and interviews as a means of aligning and honoring the energies at play. After all, it really was a choice! No one is forcing you to make choices based on the stars, but we can choose to and through the process engage with intentionality in how we schedule our time and show up. It wasn’t really until today that I felt I fully embraced the true opportunity that this liminal space grants us though.

These past few weeks have been delightfully electric, but tiring nonetheless! I’ve helped launch a podcast, I’ve written multiple blog posts, started applying to new jobs, and more! I’ve enjoyed it all, but there comes a time when you just want to press the pause button and drift amongst the darkness. I was feeling tired, irritable, and like I was in a pressure cooker with so. many. commitments, planning, scheduling, writing, posting, scheduling more, I just wanted to escape for a moment.

It was this afternoon that I realized that is exactly what the moon being void of course affords us. A moment to rest, recollect, and reposition. It grants us an opportunity to also experiment and ask for the unexpected.

I realized this when a meeting I had was rescheduled and had the thought to glance at the time table I have for the moon being void of course and it was in its transitional state until this coming morning at 4 am.

I felt the story start up again, “Well then I can’t apply to all the jobs I need to apply to or fill out that application…” but that heavy, tired side of myself took a huge deep breath and sighed happily, “We don’t have to do anything! The evening is ours!”

I realized it was offering me that very opportunity I was so desperately seeking! It grants me the opportunity to breathe, collect myself, and really map out where we are headed next versus just plunging into the depths using adrenaline. It meant listening to music and seeing how this post would develop when I sat down to write it.

Just as I utilize the full and new moon cycles to begin and let intentions culminate, I’m looking forward to utilizing this energy even more intentionally than I was before. Instead of not scheduling things out of fear, letting it be prompted permission for structuring my day with a more inward focus. Letting myself take a restful nap. Letting myself just be.

how to align with a drifting moon

while it may seem that this part of the moon cycle derails things, I really think that the tension we experience with it is so much more focused on our relationship of control and the need to be constantly working than the actual effects of the moon being void of course. when we choose alignment with its energy, in this case we don’t just access the magic it brings us, but it starts to provide alternatives for these ingrained thought patterns, stories, and beliefs about how we must structure our time. when the moon becomes void of course, i would categorize the actions that find alignment with its energy to fit into one of these three categories:

  1. mental: releasing ourselves from being busy, expectations, or the need to control

  2. physical: giving our body time to just be or engage in nurturing movement

  3. emotional: directing our energy towards what brings us joy, play, and blissful, relaxing enjoyment

now we all have our responsibilities, but I would try to engage in one of these practices and see how you feel! honestly, “see what it means for you” might as well be engraved on my tombstone already, but it’s how you get to deepen your relationship with these things and access the power it can bring for you—which beats anything I could just instruct you to do! anyways, if you can, I would try to engage in at least one of those forms of release. say the moon is void of course while you are work, while you can’t release yourself from that space or the mental labor that comes with the job, perhaps see if you can allow your energy to be directed towards something that will make your coming week easier like writing a to-do list, sorting emails, etc. WITH THAT IN MIND, here ARE SOME ADDITIONAL IDEAS…

IDEAS FOR UTILIZING THE ENERGY OF THE VOID OF COURSE MOON

  • daydream

  • take a bath

  • engage in mindful, enjoyable movement

  • if you play an instrument, now would be a great time to see where improvisation takes you

  • just start writing, see where your mind takes you—it could be a beautiful new story or just a chance to clear your mind

  • listen to music, let yourself get lost in the rhythm

  • write a to do list

  • journal

  • take a nap

  • partake in an activity that directs your energy inward — this could be reading, listening to a podcast, etc. but I personally like my energy to be inward facing rather than as express during this time, you could find the opposite and that’s totally okay!

  • enjoy Time and relax with your loved ones

  • try something new and just get curious about what will happen! attend that meet up you’ve been thinking about, try a new activity, etc.

  • try a social media detox/blackout

  • edit, revise, reconsider during this time

things to consider

while I think it’s a disempowering experience for me to just tell you to do or not to do certain things, I think that the moon being void of course offers us the opportunity to reconsider partaking in particular activities, just as it provides us the opportunity to engage with others. if we consider the qualities of the moon being void of course, it is a moment where things are suspended, softer, and a bit more ethereal it seems. as a result, it may be worth being intentional about doing the following activities.

  • making major life changing decisions

  • buying high dollar items

  • job interviews

  • important meetings

by all means, you have the free will to do whatever you want while the moon is void of course, but just be mindful of it and let that information inform you how it will! that’s the whole point of astrology!

also, if you're stuck in a position where you have no choice, even if you’d like to move it, get curious! typically things don’t necessarily develop how we would normally expect when they are started during this time, get curious about what will emerge.

Moon Meditation: Reconciling with your Moon Sign

This moon seeps through, leaves

no clue where it’s going or where it’s been

poker-faced through five decades of fall.

It holds me fast in its orange tint,

hints new love, the kind that staves off

dark space that multiply by night—

teak chairs in the breakfast nook,

empty rooms with unplugged clocks,

time stopped on old soccer trophies,

wide-eyed, open-armed plush,

and, layered in bottom drawers like mulch,

magazines that once mattered to my son.

These rooms fill and expand with the past.

Its presence gleams in this world

with feral eyes. It paws past papered walls,

skulks by mirrors, scarred and lined,

past unlit candles in cut-glass rings

that wait to burn in someone’s name.

And in the dust, shades fainter

than any howl, a cricket’s thrill—

as if it alone outlasts the cold.

the internet & our relationship with ourselves

in the age of the internet and, with it, the prevalence of astrology memes, it has been interesting to observe the phenomena of how common and easy it has become to transform aspects of ourselves—as interpreted through astrology and our natal charts—into their own characters. we often blame this cast of characters for our misfortunes, misjudgments, and for acting in ways that our sense of rationality doesn’t approve of.

we can witness this phenomena in action with the multitudes of “is mercury in retrograde?” shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, you name it, to having the different signs be reduced to their lowest common denominator and astrology being used to tell people who they are versus using it as an complex, informative practice.

now don’t get me wrong, I love astrology memes as much as the next person. It is special kind of catharsis that these memes and jokes about different astrological placements bring. it makes you and your struggle with different aspects of your life feel acknowledged and seen. at the same time, there always has to be balance and the entertainment we seek often acts as a reflection of our collective psyche. with the popularity of these memes, it is much easier to attribute the aspects of our lives that we are ashamed of to external forces, these seemingly bad actors that aren’t interested in matching up who you are with your preconceived notions of who you want to be. we can all sympathize with this struggle, and so we all partake in the entertainment—sometimes it makes aspects of ourselves that require emotional work, that may feel burdensome or shameful at times, and transforms them into something humorous and manageable.

the moon is one of these planets that often falls out of good graces when we are facing parts of ourselves that are activating, still require healing, or that we can’t control.

when we consider what the moon represents, it becomes apparent why it represents factors of our lives that we find difficult to work with and that society has conditioned us to dissociate ourselves from.

the moon

the moon represents the parts of our life that we cannot overpower through sheer force of our will. instead, it represents our needs that need to be met in their own right such as our appetite, thirst, and hormonal cycles such as sleep. in doing so, it represents surrender, listening, passivity, tending to our needs and acknowledging our desires. it reminds us that life is cyclical, that we all have our own ebb and flows, our own cycles of energy, desires, interests, that come and go with time—that we are ever changing beings. it also holds some of the most vulnerable, tender components of ourselves. it represents where we derive our sense of security, how we feel recognized on a soul level, where we feel childish glee and our most basic comforts, our associations with childhood, past lives, and our subconscious.

in a society that is based on sun-centric values, that rewards the exercise of sheer willpower and dominance over any inherent need or desire, and sets up expectations for what we should want and have versus what we actually desire, it is no wonder the moon and the way its archetype presents itself is quite challenging!

as a result, we push it away and try to cleave this “emotional” side of ourselves, but get overwhelmed when our needs and desires rear their head and demand they are met.

we instead face burnout, imposter syndrome, sleep deprivation, impulse buying, having spiritual gurus tell us what we need, prescriptive self-care regimens, neglected inner children, fear of expressing our more freeform, childish selves, and struggle to create relationships that meet our needs because we don’t even know what those needs are.

i’m writing this when the first full moon of the year—based on the Gregorian calendar—is high in the sky for 2019. when it reaches its peak at 0 degrees in Leo, it will sit directly on top of my natal moon also stationed at 0 degrees in Leo; I suppose it has offered a bit of inspiration to consider how to heal our relationship with these planets and, in doing so, heal our relationship with ourselves. as a result, i’ve composed this journaling meditation to help you start to reacquaint yourself with your moon, empower your personal relationship and interpretation of your moon sign and its aspects, and to hopefully start the internal dialogue necessary to start The healing process for any wounds that remain centered around your moon.

healing with your moon sign: a journaling meditation

  1. you will need your natal chart for this exercise. you may already have this readily available, otherwise you can access websites such as Astro.com where you will enter your name, date of birth, time of birth, and the location you were born for your chart to be generated.

  2. take a look at your full chart—if you are new to astrology, you will see a circle divided into twelve sections, glyphs around the circle, and lines drawn between each glyph.

  3. spot the glyph that looks like a crescent moon: ☽

  4. when you spot this symbol, look at the number of the section it is in—this is the house it is located within.

  5. also look to see which section it is included in based on the zodiac symbols—this is your “moon sign” or the zodiac sign that rules over your moon.

  6. you may also notice a number near the ☽ glyph or in the table you’re referencing—this is the degree your natal moon is stationed at and may prove useful.

  7. if you are more comfortable and practiced with utilizing your astrological chart, you may write down the different aspects to your moon as well.

once you have collected each of these pieces of information, write each of them out onto a piece of paper.

for myself, my moon is in the 4th house, is in Leo, and is at 0 degrees.

each of these pieces of information carry its own story and insight into yourself, your relationship with yourself, and how these different aspects within your birth chart relate to one another. this is not so much as a test, but a writing prompt to start peeling back the layers or exploring the many tributaries and channels that feed into this aspect of your life—and they will continue to shift and change as you grow and develop.

HOUSE

IN THE ABSTRACT WORLD OF THE NATAL CHART, THE HOUSES ACT AS A POINT OF ORIENTATION. THE COMMON ANALOGY IS THAT YOUR CHART IS LIKE A HOUSE WITH ROOMS—EACH HOUSE IN YOUR CHART IS LIKE A ROOM WITH A PARTICULAR DESIGNATED PURPOSE.

1ST CORRESPONDS WITH SELF/IDENTITY, 2ND MONEY/POSSESSION, 3RD communications/kindred connection, 4th home/family, 5th self-expression/play/children, 6th health, 7th partnership, 8th sex/power, 9th philosophy/higher ed, 10th career/work/social status, 11th friendships/the collective, 12th spirituality/subconscious

each of these keywords can act as a point of inspiration and divergence, but doesn’t need to confine your imagination.

reference which house your moon is in and begin reflecting in your journal what your experience is with that aspect of your life.

  • what are you initial responses — notice them in your body, write them down.

  • what memories come to mind with this area of your life?

  • what colors, smells, feelings, sensations, come up?

  • keywords?

  • do you associate this with an environment outside of the one that these memories took place in?

in this process, consider the relationship you have between this house and the aspects that this moon represents.

  • how do you see the moon and what it encapsulates appear?

  • what are your associations with security, emotion, comfort, or needs in this landscape?

  • how do they appear?

  • what is your reaction to the moon’s influence in this aspect of your life?

  • how would you like to see the moon manifest itself in this space?

  • what do you need to listen to?

SIGN

the sign your moon is in will provide greater detail to its own flavor and texture that it may present itself. while this encourages some of the characterization we see on the internet and through memes, we are going to develop this for the purposes of becoming familiarized with the moon in your life so we can form a relationship, listen to and meet its needs.

check which area of the zodiac your moon falls under and begin to free associate with that sign.

consider factor such as:

  • the season that zodiac sign represents

  • people you know that embody the sun sign of this sign—how is your experience or relationship with this energy different or similar

  • what story do you tell yourself about this zodiac sign?

  • what blame do you want to put on its character?

  • what makes you uncomfortable? what comforts you about this sign?

  • how does this characterization of your moon interact with the landscape of the house its in? perhaps journal a scene or meditate without writing and imagine the interplay.

  • what resistance do you feel against bracing this part of yourself?

  • how do you see this archetype or energy reflected in greater society or in your day?

DEGREE

hopefully this has started some form of dialogue within yourself about the moon and what it represents for you and the associations you have. if you are looking for additional information to consider or draw up additional associations, I personally like to consider the degree of different planets.

with the degree known, we can reference sabian symbols were produced in 1925 by clairvoyant Elsie Wheele, in which she provides a different symbol for every degree of the zodiac—which can be referenced via cafe astrology.

these symbols may seem a bit bizarre or silly initially, but I find that they can be an interesting starting point that brings in associations we wouldn’t normally consider—just like how writing prompts we are unfamiliar with can bring in new facets of our imagination and association.

aspects

if you chose to write down the different aspects in relation to your moon, this can be a starting point to continuing to explore through your chart using similar methods.

the different aspects will describe the relationship that your moon has with other planets in your life and may provide further information about internal conflicts you may experience, needs that seem to be confusing or difficult to identify, or a difficulty in getting settled and finding security due to harder aspects such as oppositions and squares—or you may find a unique fulfillment of the needs that you have through conjunctions and trines (and later oppositions and squares as it becomes a working practice).

OTHER ROUTES OF EXPLORATION

this is not meant to be an exercise in finality or even that of “accuracy,” but instead an exercise rooted in compassion, self-discovery, and empowerment. while there is plenty of lovely literature out there that you can dive into about your sun, moon, and other planets—know that what matters at the end of the day is its usefulness to you. you hold within yourself your own experience of every single one of these placements and you will continue to understand their different dimensions and influences as you progress through your life through your own decisions as well as through different transits.

with that in mind, I highly encourage getting creative with your mode of exploration!

other ideas for exploring and healing your relationship with your moon sign:

  • create a playlist of the songs that you relate to this aspect

  • create a collage

  • make your own form of art

  • make your own song

  • host a discussion

i’m excited to share my own work with this in the next few weeks on my instagram.
